University of North Georgia Nighthawks Essay Competition

Though there is a significant demonstrated interest among high school students towards a career path in Economics, there is an observable deficit of economics-related opportunities available for high school students, thereby thwarting the accessibility of early experiences in the field. There are approximately 35,000 students who strive to pursue a post-secondary education in Economics each year. However, there are only two accessible programs in which high school students are able to broaden their economic horizons: The National Economics Challenge (NEC) and the High School Federal Reserve Challenge (HSFRC). To exacerbate this deficit, the HSFRC is strictly regional, thus limiting its participants to students from only the New York and Chicago Federal Reserve Districts.

To create a substitutive solution to this educational disparity, the Junior Economic Club of Atlanta has partnered with the University of North Georgia to start the UNG Nighthawks Essay Competition - an educational program that aims to encourage high school students to learn more about economics in general and macroeconomics in particular. Participants will develop research and writing skills. The University of North Georgia (UNG) will designate the competition’s theme each year.

The UNG Nighthawks Essay Competition is open to all eligible students and teachers without regard to ethnicity, gender, religion (creed), age, disability, or any other discriminatory reason. Participating high schools must be located in the Atlanta metropolitan area or the Northeast Georgia region.

  • Eligible high school students must be enrolled in one of grades 9 – 12 at the time of registration.

  • Each eligible high school may register only one team for the competition and each team may submit only one entry each year.

  • Each team will consist of three to eight students who must be enrolled at the participating high school at the time of registration.

  • Each team will consist of one faculty advisor who teaches economics or a closely-related discipline.
